(Friday, February 5, 2021 – Washington, DC) “I thank Alejandro Mayorkas, the newly appointed Secretary of Homeland Security, for reaching out to me during his third day in office to reaffirm his commitment to the people of Puerto Rico and genuine desire to strengthen our ongoing partnership for the benefit of the island.
During our open and very productive phone conversation, in which we were also joined by FEMA’s Acting Administrator Robert “Bob” Fenton, I reiterated what I have been saying all along that Puerto Rico must be treated fairly and on equal terms with any other state in the Nation that has been impacted by a natural disaster.
Puerto Rico shouldn’t have more hurdles than the state of Florida or Texas. The lack of sensitivity to the American citizens living on the island is unacceptable.
Our conversation reassured me that under the new Biden-Harris administration Puerto Rico we will work hand-in-hand with our federal allies to secure equal treatment and provide all technical and substantive support to streamline Section 406 and 428’s processes with the sense of urgency it deserves.
I look forward to working with Secretary Mayorkas to bolster President Biden’s efforts towards emergency management, crime, the war on drugs, and securing our insular borders, among many other efforts.”
