“Today, the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure approved H.R. 7575, The Water Resources Development Act of 2020 (WRDA 2020) which includes a $232 million increase in funding for the Caño Martín Peña Environmental Restoration Project (CMP-ERP). This bill also includes provisions requiring the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct feasibility reports on flood risk management projects for Rio Culebrinas, Rio Grande de Manatí, and Rio Guayanilla in Puerto Rico. PRFAA has worked with ENLACE, Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner, Jenniffer González-Colón, and Congressional Committees to provide necessary information to progress these critically important water infrastructure project priorities in Puerto Rico.
The House Committee’s favorable approval of this legislation comes after the U.S. Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works passed S.3591, the America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2020, out of Committee. We thank the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Peter A. DeFazio, and Ranking Member Sam Graves for the swift passage of this legislation. WRDA 2020 includes essential provisions that would provide Puerto Rico the necessary resources to ensure the welfare and safety of the island’s citizens from natural and human-made threats and aid in reducing the risk of future damages from flood storm events as we enter into Hurricane Season 2020.
