PRFAA Assists Congressional Delegation Led by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer Visit to Puerto Rico as they meet with Local Officials to Discuss Disaster Recovery after Recent Earthquakes

(February 15, 2020 Guánica, P.R.) – On February 16-18, 2020, Members of the Congressional Delegation (CODEL) led by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and joined by the Executive Director of PRFAA, Jennifer M. Storipan, Esq. will meet with Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced and Puerto Rico officials. During the CODEL, the members will visit the Costa Sur plant and the Guánica and Guayanilla refugee camps in the southwest region of the island. The camps currently have thousands of refugees that continue to sleep under tents, in cots, as seismic activity continues to strike the region.

The CODEL is comprised of Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD-5th), Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY-7th), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14th), and Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY-12th).

The CODEL will also meet with Puerto Rico Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Central Office for Reconstruction, Recovery, and Resiliency (COR3), Puerto Rico Department of Education (PRDE), the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, and the Puerto Rico National Guard, Commander General Miguel Mendez, to discuss disaster recovery after the 2020 earthquakes.

“We thank Majority Leader Hoyer for leading this CODEL and visiting the Guánica and Guayanilla camps in the southwest region of the island after recent seismic activity affected the region,” said Jennifer M. Storipan, Esq. “It is important that Members see the damage caused by these earthquakes and the need for assistance that survivors on the south of the island need to make a full recovery. PRFAA will continue to support CODELS that visit the island in order to ensure the federal government sees the recovery efforts beforehand.”
