(March 18, 2017 – Fajardo, Puerto Rico) Governor Ricardo A. Rosselló Nevares met this afternoon with democratic senator Kamala Harris as part of his efforts to advance the administration’s economic development measures and solve the rapidly approaching drop in federal healthcare funding for Puerto Rico, known as Medicaid cliff.
This is the first-time Senator Harris, who served as the 32nd Attorney General of California, visits the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico.
The Oversight Board recently certified the Government’s Fiscal Plan, and Rosselló Nevares highlighted that Puerto Rico will need the support of Congress to create long-term economic growth for the Island.
The Governor expressed that Congress should act swiftly to secure federal healthcare funding and avoid the Medicaid cliff.
Rosselló talked with Senator Harris about the political status plebiscite to be held in Puerto Rico on June 11th, and communicated the need to end the territory’s colonial relationship with the United States.
Harris vowed to return to Puerto Rico and collaborate with Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares in implementing measures that benefit the people of Puerto Rico.
