USDA grants $796,527 to Puerto Rico

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) assigned $796,527 to Puerto Rico under the USDA Funded Plant Pest and Disease Management and Disaster Prevention Program and the National Clean Plant Network. Funds are aimed to the detection and delimitation of the Old World Bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), found last year in grain crops in San Germán, conduct studies on bees and citrus clean plant conservation in Puerto Rico, and the preservation of the necessary infrastructure to grow healthy plants free of pests or diseases. Director meets with police reform monitor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández met today in his office with Arnaldo Claudio, Technical Compliance Adviser to the P.R. Police Department, who was appointed by the U.S. Justice Department to oversee compliance with police reform in the Island. During the meeting, they discussed advancements of the police reform and other issues regarding security in Puerto Rico.

PRFAA in favor of bill to include Puerto Rico in HITECH Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández welcomed H.R. 1225, referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means, which would allow hospitals in Puerto Rico to qualify for incentives for adoption and meaningful use of certified electronic health record technology. This bill amends the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), to include Puerto Rico in its provisions. (more…)

U.S. Department of Defense announces job openings in Vieques

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) will open a call tomorrow, Thursday, March 5, 2015, to fill 23 positions of civil work in Vieques. These job openings were created to operate a radar installation that they still manage in the Island, and is  currently operated by contractors and used, among other things, to detect ships being used for drug trafficking. This radar, of advanced technology, has the ability to detect ships located up to 1,600 nautical miles away. (more...)

U.S. Department of Health grants $1.9 million for preparation and prevention of Ebola in Puerto Rico

Washington, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the P.R. Department of Health will receive a total of $1,909,235 to create a response system and develop a regional treatment strategy for Ebola. These funds will be granted under the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) and the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program (PHEP), with which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) seeks to increase the capacity to successfully identify, isolate, and treat patients infected with Ebola in Puerto Rico.
