Senator McCain reaffirms in U.S. Senate floor the benefit that the amendment to the Jones Act will have on Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that Senator John McCain (R-AZ), who introduced an amendment to S. 1 (Keystone X.L. Pipeline Act) to revise the Jones Act, spoke today on the Senate floor supporting approval of this amendment. During his speech, Senator McCain pointed out that: “This is an amendment to modify the Jones Act, an archaic 1920s-era law that hinders free trade, stifles the economy and hurts consumers.” (more…)

CMS grants $1.9 million for improvements in the performance of the public health system in Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) granted $1,944,740 million under the State Innovation Models Initiative to the Department of Health of Puerto Rico. These funds are intended to improve the performance of the public health system, specifically in the areas of quality health care and Medicare costs reduction in Puerto Rico. (more…)

Bill that allows extension of federal reimbursements from rum taxes is approved

Hernández announced today that he is pleased and feeling optimistic with the approval of the bill that extends cover-over subsidies of rum taxes to Puerto Rico, which allows the renewal of expired tax measures and rates paid by manufacturing corporations in the Island that operate as US domestic companies. USDA Grants Funds to the Puerto Rico Agricultural Extension Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded $179,220, under the 2501 Program, to the Puerto Rico Agricultural Extension Service to compile statistical data on the condition of veteran farmers and military families in Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, there is no available statistical data for veteran farmers and ranchers (VFR), so a graduate student of the Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Department at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, will be conducting an assessment to collect data and identify the needs of VFR and military family members working in the agriculture sector. Once the assessment is finished, the gathered data will help the Program Directors identify possible ideas and projects for them, including educational activities. (more…)

PRFAA Convenes Discussions Regarding The Revitalization Of The “Caño Martín Peña”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that PRFAA has organized a group of visitors to Puerto Rico from U.S government, leaders of the Puerto Rican Diaspora, and important foundations with the purpose of advancing plans to dredge the “Caño Martín Peña” (CMP by its Spanish acronym) and the socioeconomic developments of surrounding communities. During November 8, 12 and 14, visitors will be meeting with CMP community leaders to give their intake on ways to reach their goals of dredging and revitalizing the CMP. These visits are the result of collaborative efforts between PRFAA’s Regional Office in New York, the “Proyecto ENLACE de Puerto Rico”, the U.S. Department of Housing, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Health, and the Environmental Protection Agency. USDA Allocates Funds For The Development Of The Agricultural Sector In Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) granted $524,511.15 to the P.R. Department of Agriculture to be used in nine projects focused on agricultural development. These funds are awarded under the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program and will be used to increase sales and product exposure by participating in national and international farmer’s markets and create advertising campaigns to promote local products (DelPaís) in the media.
