KISSIMMEE, FL – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández highlighted today the many accomplishments of PRFAA’s Regional Office in Florida on the occasion of the first anniversary of the office serving the state’s Puerto Rican Diaspora.

“Governor Alejandro García Padilla inaugurated PRFAA’s Regional Office in Florida last August. This office has since been providing services to the Puerto Rican Diaspora in the Sunshine State. Our Florida Regional Office has also worked closely with the Puerto Rico Trade and Export Company, and the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Corporation to promote the Island’s economic development,” Hernández said. Corporation for National and Community Service to provide $11.2 million in competitive grants to city and state governments and nonprofit organizations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández, announced today that the Corporation for National and Community Service will provide up to $11.2 million in grants through the 2014 Social Innovation Fund (SIF) Pay for Success (PFS) Grants Competition. These funds will be available to city and state governments and eligible nonprofit organizations seeking to advance and evaluate emerging models that align payment for social services with verified social outcomes in order to enhance the reach and impact of innovative community-based solutions in low-income communities. U.S. Department of Labor Awards $6 million to Boost Job Creation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor awarded $6,175,000 to Puerto Rico through the Job-Driven National Emergency Grant program with the purpose of training workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own. The grants announced today will help build partnerships between industry, labor and communities to help unemployed Puerto Ricans learn about job openings, identify what skills are needed to fill them, and train so they can apply for good-paying jobs. First Commencement Ceremony of Puerto Rican University in Maryland

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández attended the first commencement ceremony for students graduating with their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University System Ana G. Méndez (SUAGM, for its acronym in Spanish) in Maryland. The SUAGM established their Capital Area Campus in the state of Maryland in 2012 and it is comprised of its three University Centers “Universidad del Este,” “Universidad del Turabo,” and “Universidad Metropolitana.” During the ceremony, degrees were awarded in a variety of concentrations such as criminal justice, accounting, business administration, education, public and non-profit management, public affairs, and management among others. Governor of Illinois declares “Borinqueneers Day”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández expressed his gratitude on behalf of the people of Puerto Rico to Governor Pat Quinn for declaring July 14  as “Borinqueneers Day” in the state of Illinois.

Governor Quinn signed the proclamation declaring July 14 as “Borinqueneers Day,” a date which also marks the 61st anniversary of “Battle of Hill 412” in the Korean War. The Governor will make a formal declaration this weekend close to the Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School, which was named after the man who was a Second Lieutenant in the 375th Provisional Regiment of Puerto Rico, another segregated unit of the U.S. Army. USDA awards $152,492 to the Puerto Rico Community Foundation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded a $152,492 grant to the Puerto Rico Community Foundation. These funds were distributed through USDA’s Rural Community Development Initiative (RCDI) to organizations dedicated to community development, and other groups that promote economic growth in low income rural communities.

The USDA does not provide these funds directly to businesses or individuals. Instead, they will be distributed by the Puerto Rico Community Foundation to three nonprofit organizations in rural areas of Puerto Rico. (more…)

U.S. Senate passes bill that includes $11.5 million for expansion of a veterans clinic in Ponce

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Senate passed a bill that includes $11,535,000 for the expansion of a health clinic, which provides services for veterans in Ponce. On March 31, Hernández sent a letter to the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veteran’s Affairs, the Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), in which he requested the inclusion of these funds for the hospital in Ponce. The bill was approved today in a bipartisan fashion by the vast majority of senators and will inject much needed funds and implement several reforms to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system that would help address the recent crisis, which has affected tens of thousands of veterans across the United States. WASHINGTON, D.C. –Governor Alejandro García Padilla joined President Barack Obama in recognizing the efforts of the Puerto Rican members of the 65th Infantry Regiment, better known as the Borinqueneers, by awarding them the Congressional Gold Medal. The medal is one of the highest civilian honors in the United States. It is also the most important award given to any Hispanic military unit in the history of the nation. (more…)

PRFAA’s New York Regional Office hosts forum with mayors and federal agencies

Nueva York, NY – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández hosted a round table in PRFAA’s New York Regional Office where he welcomed 17 mayors from both parties of Puerto Rico as well as officials from federal agencies and New York City Government. The round table was comprised of representatives from several federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), the Small Business Administration (SBA), and representatives of the New York City Department of Education. Issues discussed at the forum included solid waste management, education, energy, vulnerability before a natural disasters, public housing, and federal funding opportunities. (more...)

U.S. Department of Transportation Awards $4.2 million for Improvement of Culebra, Ponce & Arecibo Airports

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)  awarded a total of $4,200,934 to the Port Authority of Puerto Rico with the purpose of improving the facilities in the following airports: Benjamín Rivera Noriega in Culebra, Mercedita in Ponce, and Antonio Juarbe in Arecibo. These funds were disbursed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and will be used to revamp the airport runway of Culebra ($1,299,244), to purchase cleaning and aerial rescue vehicles in Ponce ($742,500), and to construct and improve the drainage system, the taxiway, and the access to the airport terminal in Arecibo ($2,159,190).
