PRFAA welcomes all joint efforts to include Puerto Rico in Chapter 9 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that PRFAA welcomes and supports bill seeking to amend dispositions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, which is schedule to be introduced in Congress this week. This bill seeks Puerto Rico’s inclusion in Chapter 9 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, which would benefit public corporations in the Island. (more…)

Against White House stance new status bill introduced in Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández denounced today that Resident Commissioner Pierluisi insists on introducing a status bill in Congress that does not include all existing postures, therefore does not represent all Puerto Ricans. In the 2012 referendum, 1.9 million Puerto Ricans participated and only 44 percent favored statehood, which means that almost half a million voters declined to respond to the second question on the ballot, proving the dissatisfaction with the options offered. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández participated today, along with PRFAA Federal Proposals Director Esteban Vélez Rios and   PRFAA Federal Proposals Analyst Dr. Eva Lynn Rodríguez, in the Puerto Rico Federal Grants and Contracts Training Summit. This two-day summit is organized by the Puerto Rico federal Funds Management Office affiliated to the Puerto Rico Office of Management and Budget (OGP, by its Spanish acronym), with the intention of training professionals in the federal program field on how to find, earn, and manage grants, in order to increase uptake of federal grants to the Island. Senator McCain reaffirms in U.S. Senate floor the benefit that the amendment to the Jones Act will have on Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that Senator John McCain (R-AZ), who introduced an amendment to S. 1 (Keystone X.L. Pipeline Act) to revise the Jones Act, spoke today on the Senate floor supporting approval of this amendment. During his speech, Senator McCain pointed out that: “This is an amendment to modify the Jones Act, an archaic 1920s-era law that hinders free trade, stifles the economy and hurts consumers.” (more…)

Under review of House Committee bill that would increase resources for security in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean

Washington, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that a new disposition has been added to the HR 399, which would represent a substantial increase in resources devoted to safety in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

The disposition included in the bill stipulates that for the next two years, the Secretary of Homeland Security will allocate more resources destined to increase maritime surveillance hours in order to conduct interdiction operations; increase maritime signals intelligence capabilities; increase maritime domain awareness and surveillance capabilities, including unmanned aerial vehicles, an increase in maritime aviation patrol hours, and coastal radar surveillance systems. USDA grants $700,000 for the conservation of natural resources in Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) granted $700,000 in competitive funds to the Soil Conservation District of Eastern Puerto Rico. These funds are granted under the USDA Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) and aim to improve drainage and water flow in the Yabucoa Agriculture Reserve, allowing flood waters to return to the main channel of Rio Guayanés. The project will manage runoff, flooding and ponding, while controlling the seasonal high water table, by planting critical areas, removing channel obstructions, protection heavy use areas, and installing grassed waterways, lined waterways and outlets, water control structures and water and sediment control basins, among others. Senator McCain files amendment that makes flexible bill that regulates natural gas transportation

Washington, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) filed an amendment to S.1 (Keystone X.L. Pipeline Act) seeking to repeal the U.S. build requirement of the Jones Act for vessels transporting natural gas from the United States. This amendment would allow to transport natural gas in vessels built outside the U.S., which is extremely positive for Puerto Rico allowing to acquire natural gas from the United States at an affordable price. Bill that allows extension of federal reimbursements from rum taxes is approved

Washington, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that he is pleased and feeling optimistic with the approval of the bill that extends cover-over subsidies of rum taxes to Puerto Rico, which allows the renewal of expired tax measures and rates paid by manufacturing corporations in the Island that operate as US domestic companies.
