First liquefied natural gas powered containership will dock in Puerto Rico in the coming months

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the cargo shipping company, Sea Star Line launched, this past weekend in San Diego, the first liquefied natural gas powered containership. The ship christened Isla Bella (Beautiful Island), is the first ship manufactured by General Dynamics with this kind of technology and is the first of two of this kind that will be assigned to serve between Jacksonville and San Juan in the coming months, for a total investment of $350 million. The new 764 ft. containership, capable of carrying 3,100 containers, was designed to accommodate a larger number of 53 ft. containers and, because of its use of natural gas as fuel, will set new standards of safety, reliability, and environmental responsibility.
