PRFAA Highlights Accomplishments of its Florida Regional Office on First Anniversary of Reopening

KISSIMMEE, FL – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández highlighted today the many accomplishments of PRFAA’s Regional Office in Florida on the occasion of the first anniversary of the office serving the state’s Puerto Rican Diaspora.

“Governor Alejandro García Padilla inaugurated PRFAA’s Regional Office in Florida last August. This office has since been providing services to the Puerto Rican Diaspora in the Sunshine State. Our Florida Regional Office has also worked closely with the Puerto Rico Trade and Export Company, and the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Corporation to promote the Island’s economic development,” Hernández said. FEMA Awards $1.4 Million to Community Organizations in Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) awarded $1,496,435 in funds to Puerto Rico. These funds come from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) administered by the DHS’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will be distributed to various community organizations that provide shelter, food, and supportive services for homeless people. In addition to this, EFSP funds are also used in some programs to cover utility bills of people with an emergency not related to a disaster. (more…)

HHS Awards $1.4 Million in Funds for Health Centers in Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded $1,483,921 in funds to establish and expand mental health services in Puerto Rico. Health centers will use these funds to hire new mental health professionals, add mental health and substance abuse disorder health services, and employ integrated models of primary care. (more…)

$4.8 Million in Federal Funds Awarded for Housing and Community Development

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded a total of $4,868,281 in funds to the municipalities of Fajardo, Guayama, San Sebastian, Toa Alta, Vega Baja, and Yauco. These funds are awarded under the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) with the purpose of promoting urban community development in Puerto Rico. (more…)

Puerto Rico Receives Greater Flexibility to Implement Federal Health Reform

Governor García joins efforts asking Congress to reauthorize the U.S. Export-Import Bank

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that Governor Alejandro García Padilla joined a bipartisan effort to send a letter, together with 30 United States governors, asking Congress to reauthorize the provision of funds that guarantees the continuity of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, which is scheduled to end operations in September. U.S. Department of Interior awards $601,285 for parks and environmental conservation in Puerto Rico

Washington, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Interior awarded $601,285 to Puerto Rico for the creation and protection of parks and other outdoor recreational areas. The funds come from the Land and Water Conservation Fund with the purpose of assisting local and state governments in the conservation of the environment by creating recreational spaces for the community’s enjoyment. The government of Puerto Rico will choose which projects will benefit from these federal funds. (more…)

Director greets graduates from the Puerto Rico Youth Challenge Academy

Washington D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández met today with a group of graduates from the Puerto Rico Youth Challenge Academy, as part of their educational trip to Washington, DC.  The Puerto Rico Youth Challenge Academy is managed by the Puerto Rico National Guard and was created under the “ChallenNGe” program, with the purpose of providing the necessary training and mentoring to transform high school dropouts into productive citizens. This academy is currently considered to be the best out of the 53 academies in the United States. (more…)

Corporation for National and Community Service to provide $11.2 million in competitive grants to city and state governments and nonprofit organizations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández, announced today that the Corporation for National and Community Service will provide up to $11.2 million in grants through the 2014 Social Innovation Fund (SIF) Pay for Success (PFS) Grants Competition. These funds will be available to city and state governments and eligible nonprofit organizations seeking to advance and evaluate emerging models that align payment for social services with verified social outcomes in order to enhance the reach and impact of innovative community-based solutions in low-income communities. U.S. Department of Labor Awards $6 million to Boost Job Creation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Director Juan E. Hernández announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor awarded $6,175,000 to Puerto Rico through the Job-Driven National Emergency Grant program with the purpose of training workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own. The grants announced today will help build partnerships between industry, labor and communities to help unemployed Puerto Ricans learn about job openings, identify what skills are needed to fill them, and train so they can apply for good-paying jobs.
