What is the 501(c)(3) status?

The 501(c)(3) is the section of the IRS that grants a nonprofit the Federal Tax Exempt Status. 

Are all nonprofit organizations eligible to receive the Federal Tax Exempt status?

No. Only those organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, educational, and other specified purposes.

Where do we find the applicationfor recognition of exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code?

What is the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA)?

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) is an online database of all federal programs available to state and local governments, federally-recognized Indian tribal governments, territories and possessions of the United States, domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions, specialized groups, and individuals.  The address is www.cfda.gov.

Where can we find the notifications of current federal programs available?

At the Grants.gov website, www.grants.gov. 

How are proposals submitted?

Most proposals are submitted through the grants.gov website.  An organization has to register before submitting a proposal.

Before registering at the grants. gov website an organization needs;

• The Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS), a unique nine-character identification number provided by the commercial company Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). D&B assigns DUNS numbers for each physical location of a business. To request the DUNS, http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform/         
• Register with the Central Contractor Registration (CCR).  The (CCR) is the primary vendor database for the U.S. federal government. CCR validates applicant information and electronically shares the secure and encrypted data with the federal agencies' finance offices to facilitate paperless payments through Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). The CCR stores your organizational information, allowing Grants.gov to verify your identity and to pre-fill organizational information on your grant applications. There is no cost for registering.
